Tips on Designing a Water-smart Landscape
with Color, Interest, and Budget Savings
Saturday, June 2
2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Taught by Ruth E. Wolfe, Landscape Designer, UC Master Gardener
Join award-winning landscape designer Ruth E. Wolfe for an introductory class on how to design a colorful and more interesting drought-tolerant landscape using an array of unusual, low-water plants and layers of waterwise bulbs for four seasons of bloom.
The design instruction will focus on formal design fundamentals and Wolfe’s common sense approach to developing beautiful, water-wise gardens for both flat and sloped areas. A pictorial history of two gardens will be used to demonstrate the design and planting solutions applied to each landscaping challenge. In addition, a budget strategy will be introduced to help you learn to identify what is needed for your projects and what opportunities may exist for cost savings.
At the end of the class, one person’s garden photo will be randomly selected for a 15 minute group exercise where students can identify possible ideas and solutions for the landscape.
Cost: Members $15, non-members $20.

Botanical Art Series
Saturday, August 18 & 25
9:00 am – 3:00 pm
and
September 15
9:00 am – 3:00 pm
Join us for a series of workshops exploring different media to create botanical art.
First in the series is graphite an extremely versatile method of capturing the image of a plant. It can stand as the finished drawing, but is also the starting point for continuing on to other
media.
Next in the series is pen and ink, the traditional medium of botanical illustration and an elegant art form.
In the last class of the series we will tackle adding color to a subject. Color pencil is a fun medium in which you can create subtle or vibrant colors.
A
ll levels are welcome. It is strongly recommended that students sign up for graphite as it will emphasize shading to capture the form of the subject. This will be essential in the remaining two classes.
Classes will be held outdoors (unless it rains) so dress in layers. A discount is given when students sign up for all three classes.
Instructor Lesley Randall is a botanical illustrator who has worked in pen and ink for many
years. Several years ago, she rediscovered the color pencils of her youth and finds them to be a
fun and expressive way to create botanical art. She ALWAYS draws her subjects in graphite
first! She recently exhibited her award-winning botanical illustrations at the Royal Horticultural
Society’s London Orchid show.
Cost per series: Members $145, non-members $175
Cost per class (if you take less than three): Members $55, non-members $65
Please register by August 15, 2012.

How to Install a Laundry to Landscape (L2L)
Greywater Irrigation System
Saturday, August 25
10:00 am – 12 noon
Learn how to turn your laundry ‘waste’ water into a resource again by irrigating your garden, and saving up to 50% on your water bill. This system is considered 'the low hanging fruit' of greywater as it is low cost, legal without a permit and a lot of fun to build. So why pay for more water when plants love greywater, especially as water rates continue to increase? On the class we will understand the rules to follow in the California plumbers code to build a safe, reliable, gravity based system with no filters to clog, pumps or other parts to break down over time.
We’ll learn how to assess your site for suitability and cover basic plumbing and landscaping skills needed. Additionally you’ll learn about what plants do best with greywater and the do’s and don’ts of residential greywater reuse.
Greg Bullock is passionate about water and is the founder of Water Recycle, an environmental enterprise that designs sustainable, productive landscapes that grow through greywater irrigation and rain harvesting. He is the only Senior Level Certified Greywater Installer recognized by Greywater Action and the first official “Affiliate of Greywater Action” in recognition of his installation experience and commitment to education. He has built over seven years experience as a sustainable landscaper, creating many beautiful landscapes throughout California.
Cost: Members $25, non-members $30
