Girl Scouts at the San Diego Botanic Garden

Girl Scouts
Scout troops visiting to the San Diego Botanic Garden can begin with a guided tour of the Garden and then move on to unstructured nature exploration at the Hamilton Children’s Garden. Specific badge requirements can be met during the visit.
All levels
The Garden has materials for groups to complete activities from Fun and Easy Nature Science Investigations from the Plant Shapes, Seed Travelers, or Insect’s Eye View chapters.
Brownie Try-its
SDBG is a delightful place for Brownie Try-its, especially from the “What’s Out there” section. The following Try-its are especially appropriate to work on during a visit to the Garden: Plants: Watching Wildlife; or Water Everywhere.
Juniors
Junior Scouts is an exciting place to explore Junior badge requirements, especially from Chapter 7: Let’s Get Outdoors. Work on Earth Connections; Outdoor Creativity; Plants and Animals: or Wildlife.
Cadettes and Seniors
SDBG is a useful venue for pursuing Cadette and Senior Interest Patches. Individual older Scouts may wish to visit the Garden as a regular guest. Girls may arrange to talk with women on the staff who are pursuing careers in horticulture and business management at SDBG. We suggest using the Garden for requirements for the Interest Patch, Plant Life.
The Hamilton Children’s Garden
Any visit to the SDBG should include the Hamilton Children’s Garden designed especially for children ages 6-12 years. Climb Toni’s Tree House, build a fort, make music and art, search for butterflies, then challenge each other to a giant game tic-tac-toe or spell you name in plants. Run through the grass maze and tell time by the sun or race boats down the mountain stream.
