Hamilton Children's Garden Teachers Guide to Visiting the
San Diego Botanic Garden

School Field Trips, Guided Tours and
Self-guided Group Visits
San Diego Botanic Garden offers three ways for groups to connect with plants and nature in an outdoor experience: individual class field trips; Docent-led general tours; and self-guided group visits. Field trips to the San Diego Botanic Garden are designed to help teachers reinforce the California Standards of Learning.
Individual Class Field trip
A variety of field trips for up to 25 students are available for school-age children using the resources of the entire Garden, concluding with time for discovery play in the Hamilton Children’s Garden. A special admissions rate is available for groups of 12 or more. To book a field trip please e-mail ldavis@SDBGarden.org. Here are some of the field trips we offer:

School Field Trips Options for Individual Classes (Up to 30 students)
Suggested Grade Levels K-3
Why is a Strawberry a Suitcase?
Flowering plants produce fruits that provide protection for seeds. Students will learn the different ways that seeds travel and see that a baby plant is inside a seed.
Pollinating Parties
What do plants do to attract insects, birds and bats and why do they want to “party” with them? Students will learn how plants and animals trade services and why pollination is so important.
Eating with Your Eyeballs
Visiting the pond students will learn more facts about frogs and their life cycle. Aquatic plants and insects in this habitat will be viewed up close in a water sample.
Suggested Grade Levels 4-6
All Individual Class Field Trips should include time spent in the enchanting Hamilton Children’s Garden (HCG) which offers the opportunity to explore the natural world and rediscover outdoor playfulness. The HCG includes the three-story Toni’s Tree house, Butterfly Garden, Spell and Smell Garden, Incredible Edibles, Arts Garden, Music Gardens, a fort building area, giant tic-tac-toe and grass maze. A picnic table area may also be reserved.
Design a Garden Visit to Meet your Needs
Individual class field trips can be modified to meet your needs. SDBG staff will work with you to develop a field trip to reinforce specific curriculum requirements.
Fees
For groups of ten or more who register in advance, admission is $5 per student or adult chaperone. Classroom teachers enter free. $2 parking fee waived for buses or car-pools with four or more. If your visit involves a staff member or Docent, there is a $25 fee. A picnic table area may be reserved.
