Gardening and Horticulture Volunteers

Our Gardening and Horticulture volunteers play vital roles in ensuring our Garden is clean and maintained for all to enjoy. Activities include assisting our Horticulture team in planting, weeding, deadheading, mulching, raking, and general garden tidying throughout multiple areas of our 37-acre property.

Gardening

Functions:
Raking, watering, weeding, and mulching in the morning on various days of the week.

Knowledge or Training Required:
General knowledge of safe use of hand tools.

Competencies:
Ability to sustain moderate physical activity including lifting, walking, kneeling or bending and raking.

Horticulture Manager's Detail Crew

Functions:
Working with the Director of Gardens, the detail crew will do detail work such as deadheading, precision detailing of perennials, planting out plants and seasonal color, intricate pruning, lifting and dividing overgrown plants such as bromeliads, and small tree work such as fruit trees.

Knowledge or Training Required:
Knowledge of safe use of hand tools. Training will be provided. 

Competencies:
Standing, walking, kneeling or bending; moderate lifting (burlap and empty/light trash cans); ability to move hoses; ability to work outdoors for a three-hour shift.

Watering Crew

Functions:
Assist with hand watering using a hose and a Dramm water breaker nozzle on Tuesdays or Thursdays. Seeking volunteers who can commit to a consistent weekly schedule of the same day(s) each week. 

Knowledge or Training Required
No prior experience, knowledge or training required. 

Competencies:
Ability to continue working when wet and dirty; ability to lift and move water hoses; ability to continue standing, bending and lifting over several hours; ability to work outdoors for a three-hour shift.
